Bangkok layover: can you leave Suvarnabhumi Airport?

Thailand cut its visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days on 15 September 2026, but US, UK, EU, Australian and Indian passports can still walk out visa-free. Nepali travellers need a visa. Bangkok traffic is the big risk, so use the train.

Rules researched 17 Oct 2026. Always confirm with the official source and your airline.

Just changing planes? Do you need a visa at BKK?

International connections at Suvarnabhumi stay airside with no Thai visa needed. With a boarding pass you go straight to your gate; without one, use the transfer counter.

Changing terminals

One terminal for international flights. Don Mueang (DMK) is a separate airport: moving between BKK and DMK means entering Thailand, and you should allow at least 3.5 hours.

Going on to a domestic flight

For a domestic flight, bags can often be checked through to the domestic transit counter, but if they aren't, you clear immigration in Bangkok and collect them, which needs a visa if your passport requires one.

Separate tickets (self-transfer)

On separate tickets you clear immigration, collect your bags and check in again, which means entering Thailand: Nepali passports need a visa.

How long to allow

Allow at least 60–75 minutes, and 3.5 hours or more between BKK and DMK.

Airport transit visa by passport

None of the 16 passports we cover needs a visa to change planes airside at BKK, on one booking with your bags checked through. Entering the country, for a terminal change through immigration, a domestic flight or separate tickets, follows the rules in the table above.
